Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback (also called EEG biofeedback) is a non-invasive brain training technique that helps the brain learn to regulate itself. It uses real-time feedback from brainwave activity (via sensors placed on the scalp) to guide the brain toward healthier, more balanced patterns. Think of it like physical therapy for your brain. You’re not zapping or stimulating it—you’re training it, just like you’d train muscles at the gym.

How does Neurofeedback work?

Neurofeedback is a therapeutic intervention that utilises sensors to measure brainwave activity, allowing individuals to receive real-time feedback about their brain's functioning. This process involves a computer translating the brain's electrical activity into audio or visual cues, such as a movie playing when the brain is in the desired state. Through repetition and feedback, neurofeedback encourages the brain to self-correct over time, enhancing cognitive and emotional regulation.

Neurofeedback works best in the context of a safe therapeutic relationship, where it can be adjusted based on individual needs. Neurofeedback helps calm the nervous system and create a foundation of safety in the body and brain. The insights that therapy provides can help improve understanding and support behavioural change. Together, the effectiveness and speed of therapy are significantly improved. In short, neurofeedback gives your brain the tools and therapy teaches you how to use them for real life change.

What Mental Can Neurofeedback Help With?

Neurofeedback is backed by decades of research and is used to alleviate the challenges or distress often associated with a range of mental health problems, physical health conditions and neurodevelopmental conditions. Some examples of the following benefits that have been found are"

⸻

ADHD & Executive Function Issues

   •    Improved focus, attention, and impulse control
   •    Reduced hyperactivity and restlessness
   •    Increased regulation of mood and frustration tolerance

Anxiety & Panic Disorders

   •    Reduction in overactive brainwave patterns
   •    Increased regulation of fear responses and quiet internal  “noise”
   •    Reduced physical symptoms of anxiety (e.g., tight chest,  racing heart)

Depression & Low Mood

   •    Enhanced frontal brain activity

   •    Lift in “mental fog” and emotional flatness

   •    Improved motivation and mood regulation

Autism Spectrum Conditions

   •    Increased self-regulation and emotional control
   •    Improved sensory processing and social engagement
   •    Reduced overwhelm, shutdowns, and meltdowns

PTSD & Trauma

   •    Reduction in fight/flight/freeze responses
   •    Improved nervous system healing after chronic stress or trauma
   •    Enhanced benefits when used alongside EMDR and somatic therapy

Insomnia & Sleep Disorders

   •    Brain shifts into slower, restorative states
   •    Reduction in night-time hyperarousal (e.g., racing thoughts, cortisol surges)
   •    Improved sleep onset and quality

Migraines & Chronic Pain

   •    Increased regulation in overactive brain regions tied to pain sensitivity
   •    Reduced stress response and neurological stability

Perimenopause and Menopause

   •    Reduced hot flashes, anxiety, brain fog, and emotional swings
   •    Increased regulation in temperature control centres and stress responses

⸻

Neurofeedback can also be used for:

   •    Sensory processing issues
   •    Learning difficulties (dyslexia, auditory processing)
   •    Burnout, overwhelm, and chronic stress
   •    Peak performance training (e.g., athletes, performers, executives)

⸻

What Neurofeedback is Not:

   •    It’s not a quick fix—it’s a learning process, like retraining a muscle.
   •    It doesn’t “shock” the brain or use medication.
   •    It should always be tailored to the individual—one size doesn’t fit all
